Vineyard head coach Matt Mincone had a feeling the hockey team’s first round playoffs game would go long.
And that’s just what happened Tuesday night as the Vineyarders defeated visiting Sandwich 2-1 in overtime before a roaring crowd. Just over two minutes into the extra time, senior co-captain Tyson Araujo swept the game winner past both a Sandwich defender and goalie Craig Hatfield to secure the Vineyard’s trip to the quarterfinals of the south section tournament.
The Vineyard scored in the first period on a beautiful setup by junior Matt Davies and senior Sam Burke, who fed to senior co-captain Brian Fraser. Fraser lifted the puck high into the right corner of the net for the goal.
"We definitely had the home ice advantage in the first," Coach Mincone said. The Vineyard outshot Sandwich 7-1 early on, but the Blue Knights rallied in the second and evened the score with 1:26 remaining in the period.
Sophomore goalie Wyatt Jenkinson turned in a standout third period, coming up with four huge saves.
The score was tied 1-1 when the six-minute overtime period began.
“A whole lot of guys got a whole lot of experience today,” Coach Mincone said. Five freshman saw ice time to get their first taste of the playoffs.
The Vineyard will play the winner of Thursday's Medfield-Quincy contest. Date and time has not yet been set.
