The Vineyard basketball team’s stifling defense returned with a vengeance Tuesday night as the boys kicked off the first round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Assocation postseason with a 69-51 defeat of Norwell.
The Vineyard held Norwell to just three points—all on free throws—in the second quarter, and just 13 points overall in the first half.
Junior Alex GordonBeck led the offense with 15 points, and junior co-captain Tim Roberts notched 14. Senior Deshawn James scored all 12 of his points in the first quarter.
Norwell rallied to score 21 points in the final quarter, but could not overcome the deficit.
“The defense was as good as it’s been all season,” head coach Mike Joyce said after the game. “The energy was there.”
“If we can get out on the fast breaks and grab the rebounds, we’re good,” he said.
The Vineyard is now 17-4 on the season. They will play number six seed Wareham on Thursday at home in the quarterfinals of the south sectional tournament. Game time is at 4:30 p.m.
