Cottage City.

Oak Bluffs has celebrated an anniversary of sorts this week — 109 years have gone by since Cottage City was renamed Oak Bluffs through a bill passed in the state legislature.

Whatever the name, the town was long known as a destination for summer tourists and a haven for recreation. Photographer Joseph Chamberlain documented the late 19th century scene, which was in some ways starkly different and in other senses similar to today's summer vignettes. Flying Horses Carousel, still a favorite, stands next to a long-gone toboggan run. The shoreline is familiar, but the train running along it is not.

Here's a look at some of Chamberlain's scenes that were featured in a 2009 exhibit at the Martha's Vineyard Museum that displayed more than 70 glass plate negatives donated by Alison Shaw.
