About 1,600 runners laced up their sneakers for the 37th annual road Chilmark Road Race. With a cool breeze and warm temperatures, the runners followed the familiar five-kilometer route along Middle Road to the finish line at Beetlebung Corner. Some ran dressed in costumes, some ran to win, and others were content to take their time.

A great community event on the prettiest road on the Island. Ran my first Chilmark in the Innaugural Race. I still have the shirt designed so architecturally and appropriately by Hugh Weisman AIA. The following year, I invited some friends from the NYAC Runners Club, Tim won the 3.5 lb lobster and it was delicious that night - walked down to the Black Dog Beach and filled the lobster pot with Vineyard Harbour water (added a cup of white wine). The Middle Road is a tough course. My goal was to break 20 minutes. I got closer and closer until about '81. The curves of my age and time intersected at 20:02. I say that the start was crowded and it took 10 seconds to get to the start.
