Chilmark celebrated the last holiday weekend of the summer with enthusiasm. There were picnics and parties at the beach all through days and evenings and all the events scheduled around town were well-attended. Now to try and catch up with all the chores that we have left undone during the busy summer.

It will be a little harder for me as I managed to catch a cold fresh from my granddaughter’s school. Unfortunately, her school started before the holiday so she was already suffering with the cold when she arrived for the weekend. I suspect I am not the only grandparent with a cold this week.

Please make note that tonight is the final concert at the Chilmark Community Church. Lia Kahler will present a concert and hymn sing beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the church with a reception afterwards. The money raised will be used for charities.

We send condolences this week to the family of Georgiana B. Kurth, who died August 24. She was well-known to many in Chilmark as the family lived in town for many years. Her many friends and large family will miss her.

Jim Morgan attended the 65th reunion of his Tisbury High School class on Wednesday at the Farm Neck restaurant. He reports that there were 19 present.

The Bite restaurant will be closed on Tuesdays for the month.

Congratulations to Allyson Syslo of Chilmark who has been awarded a scholarship grant from the Former Agents of the FBI Foundation. She is the granddaughter of former special agent Michael Lawrence Syslo.

John Flender entertained his brother, Richard and his wife, Norma of New York city who were in town for a late summer visit.

The Edmund Rothschild family entertained Joseph Murphy of Brooklyn who joined them for a weekend of fishing. Mr. Murphy is a cabinetmaker in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Chilmark library welcomes Emily Levett as new library associate. She will begin her duties during the coming week and replace Kimberly Schlesinger who will be leaving this month for new horizons off Island. Emily is living in Vineyard Haven and has many lifelong Vineyard ties.

The library is back on winter hours now with no hours on Friday and Sunday.

Arnie Reisman of South Natick and Larsen Lane sends us word of his latest project. He and Ann Carol Grossman have co-produced a 90-minute documentary on Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden which will be broadcast on PBS as a special in 2008 and will premiere at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, Nov. 4 as part of the 2007 Boston Jewish Film Festival. The film features historians, business professors, former employees and Kitty Carlisle Hart and Twiggy. The film is entitled The Powder and the Glory and will play on television networks and festivals around the world.

Arnie and his wife, Paula Lyons, continue to perform as regular panelists on the weekly public radio show, Says You! It is about to begin its 12th year and can be heard on the Vineyard on Saturdays on WCAI at noon.
