Chilmark’s weather remains summery and dry in spite of some threats of rainy days . . . still no real amount of rainfall. One day of showers can’t make up for the long dry summer. However, the derby fishermen are hard at work and the late vacationers are enjoying the sunshine.

Congratulations to Carolyn Blackwell Stoeber and Stephen John Morgan who were married at the Chilmark Community Church on Saturday last. Their reception followed at the agricultural society in West Tisbury. Many family members and friends gathered to celebrate their wedding. The bride’s mother is Elizabeth Jones Stoeber and Carolyn is a descendent of the Blackwell family who were the first summer residents of Chilmark. The couple will live in Edgartown.

Congratulations to Brianna Jean and Christopher Flanders who were married on Saturday at the Heritage on Flanders Lane. Christopher is the son of Brian and Noreen Flanders of Vineyard Haven and the grandson of Florence Flanders of Vineyard Haven and the late Leslie Flanders of Chilmark. Many members of both families gathered in Chilmark for the festivities. Jeff and Amelia Bezanson came from Bridgewater to attend the wedding.

Alice Feinstein of New Rochelle, N.Y., is enjoying a two-week vacation with her daughter, Linda, in Chilmark.

Spencer Nitchie and his daughter, Sofia, of Annapolis are visiting family and friends in Chilmark this week. Sofia is a student at Bryn Mawr College and will soon leave to spend her junior year studying at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Dennis and Mary Keenan of West Hartford are visiting the Bill Meegan family on Middle Road. Mary is Bill’s sister.

Jack and Nina Huberman of Santa Fe are in Menemsha for a late-summer visit to their home here.

Everett and Shirley Dunbar came from Bridgton, Me., to spend a few days with Herb and Jane Slater this week.

Menemsha resident Tom Langman started his fishing derby season off with the first-ever grand slam on opening day! Cheers from us all!

The Friends of the Chilmark Library are inviting us all to a reception at the library on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. to say goodbye and good luck to Kimberly Schlesinger, who is leaving her library position this month.

The library would like to thank all the local businesses that generously provided coupons that were rewards in the children’s summer reading program. Many thanks to Menemsha Market, Menemsha Galley, Menemsha Texaco, Chilmark Store, Chilmark Chocolates and The Bite. The program was a great success as always.

Tom and Barbara Rivers are back at their Chilmark home. Tom enjoyed a recent birding trip to Central America and Barbara was in Florida visiting their daughter.

Chris Wiley will present a workshop on fall container gardening at the library on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m. Chris is the owner of the Vineyard Gardens in West Tisbury. The workshop is free and sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The library’s Thursday program on Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. will be a cooking demonstration by chef and cookbook author Cathy Walthers. She is a Chilmark resident and the title of her new book is Raising the Salad Bar. All are welcome.

Tom Hirt is the new face at the post office these days. He is new to the Island, having arrived here as a result of Hurricane Katrina. He was in the hotel business in New Orleans and is now happy to be living in Vineyard Haven and learning the ways of the U.S. Postal Service.
