Saturday, Sept. 8: Strong steady southerly breeze kicks up seas in Nantucket Sound. Fishermen in small boats ride the waves in the morning under blue skies off State Beach in Edgartown. The 30th anniversary George Moffett race is wet and fast. Breeze dies down late in the afternoon. Sailors gather at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club for awards ceremony under clear skies. Warm. Short-sleeved shirts. Cool evening. Starry night.

Sunday, Sept. 9: A warm beach day under blue skies. High-flying cirrus clouds decorate the western sky. Tall ship 93-foot Kalmar Nyckel heads out of Vineyard Haven harbor with sails set for an afternoon cruise. Steady southwest wind. She returns late in the afternoon. Spectacular sunset. Masts and rigging of schooners Shenandoah and When and If, together with the Kalmar Nyckel, provide delightful silhouette against a bright sky, offset by the crimson red setting sun.

Monday, Sept. 10: Sunny in the morning. Increasing clouds. Light drizzle. Humid evening.

Tuesday, Sept. 11: Damp morning. Skies are dark and overcast. Showers. Rain arrives in the afternoon in a heavy shower. In late afternoon, the trees are dripping from the mist. Rain returns late in the afternoon. First significant rainfall in weeks.

Wednesday, Sept. 12: Dry. The morning is cool. Flowers no longer are drooping. The soil in a backyard garden is moist. Dew. Downtown Oak Bluffs is bustling with traffic. The Ocean Park lawn is lush. Visitors enjoy a bag lunch on a park bench and watch ferry depart. Farm Pond culvert gets dredged. Dark black soil is piled high on the side of the road. Small waves pound the Oak Bluffs beach and seawall. A fisherman stands at the end of Little Bridge jetty. Burnt lawns show evidence of returning to green after Tuesday’s rainfall. Edgartown Whaling Church tower turns crimson late in the afternoon.

Thursday, Sept. 13: Bright autumnal morning. Lagoon Pond is flat calm at dawn. The air is dry and cool. Temperature starts in the low 50s. Wind comes out of the north.
