The Aquinnah town hall kitchen committee would like your input on Monday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. The committee is in the process of reviewing plans and designs for the new kitchen. Your input is definitely needed with regards to appliances, design, kitchenware and so on.

Aquinnah was well-represented over the weekend at the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Fest, which was produced by Richard Paradise. Richard Skidmore’s film Life was presented on Saturday afternoon, as was A Home For Us All by Elizabeth Witham and Ken Wentworth, filmed during our Aquinnah Youth Lot lottery in June.

The Aquinnah community programs committee will be hosting an autumn bazaar on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the tribal building from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The committee hosts many events for the entire community throughout the year. For vendor space, please call Betty Joslow at 508-645-3340.

Condolences to the family and friends of Alvin S. Lane, who died in Manhattan on Sept. 13. Alvin, his wife Terese and their daughters Judith and Mary Jo enjoyed their Aquinnah home overlooking Menemsha Pond for the past four decades, contributing to the community over the years. He was able to spend several weeks at his home this summer with the assistance of his nurse Lena, and his caretakers Natalie and Paula. Services were held in New York this week and his cremains will be interred on the Vineyard at a later date. He is survived by his wife Terese, daughters Mary Jo and her husband Robert Harris of Charlottesville, Va., and Judith and her husband Mark Mattson of Oakham, and by his two grandsons.

Ted and Kristina Leslie recently enjoyed a visit from his sister Shirley Polk and her husband Tom of Annapolis, Md. This was the first Vineyard visit for Tom and Shirley and it is anticipated there will be more. They thoroughly enjoyed meeting Kristina’s extended tribal family and volunteering all weekend for the powwow.

Ted and Tina’s grandsons Darrius and Philip returned to their home in Philadelphia after spending the summer with their grandparents. Kristle House arrived for their last few days of their summer vacation to accompany Darrius and Philip home.

Jannette Vanderhoop, who graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in 2000, was the recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship while attending Pitzer College from which she graduated in 2004. Derrill Bazzy reminded me of this over the weekend following my report on Matthew Scott who still holds the claim as being the first student to graduate from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School to achieve such. So, two residents of Aquinnah and members of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe have received the Gates Scholarship. Of note is the fact that Durwood Vanderhoop and Tobias Vanderhoop are readers of the scholarship applications and fly out to New Mexico every year for these duties.

Julianne Vanderhoop Mahoney and her children Ella and Emerson have their own home business on State Road. Their Orange Peel has taken off rather well with an outdoors oven that is turning out breads, muffins, rolls and pastries that are receiving raving reviews from all. Stop by and try some of her delicacies. On Wednesday evening, Julianne fires up her oven and gives a history of the oven and its capabilities while everyone brings their favorite pizza topping to sample the pizza dough being baked for the evening.

Happy 16th anniversary wishes to Derrill Bazzy and his wife Joanne Eccher on Sept. 27.

Happy birthday wishes this week to James Sanfilippo on Sept. 25th as he shares the day with Anne Weingarner of Albuquerque and Aquinnah. Hillary Smith will be celebrating on Sept. 26 after working at Menemsha Market for the summer and is now back at Falmouth Academy and Spa Tharpe.

Dennis J. Rose Sr. will observe a major milestone on Sept. 27 and shares the day with Ronald Jeffers, Dr. Jason D. Lew of Oak Bluffs and Aquinnah, and Paul O’Donnell of Attaquin Way. Kathleen Smith will celebrate on Sept. 28.
