Al Alley of Boston recently visited with his father Forrest Alley and with mom Emily Packish Frank in Vineyard Haven.

Joseph Bozyczko, his wife Vicky and their children Michael, Mikayla and Matthew were at their Lighthouse Road home over the long weekend.

Lenny and Mallory Butler have been enjoying a visit from their granddaughter Maeve and her parents Jeffie and Kevin Sheehan. Their son Maxwell played at the House of Blues in Atlanta on Tuesday evening and will be recording his first record in the very near future. Their daughter Nina is enjoying her freshman year at Wellesley College.

It was a pleasure catching up with John Chase and his wife Mary Lou over the weekend after probably more than a decade of not seeing each other. They still live in Pembroke and maintain their Camp Ground home in Oak Bluffs. John is still working as a radiology technician after all these years.

Tim Cook and his sister Charlotte have been enjoying the autumn air at their family home in East Pasture.

Kevin Devine, his wife Tabitha and their children Anthony, Derrick and Kylie have been visiting his mother Wendy King, sister Stephanie Devine and her son Christopher Camacho and other family and friends across the Vineyard. Kevin and his family will be relocating from Eglin AFB in Florida to Fort Drum in New York. He will most likely be scheduled for his third tour of duty in Iraq in July 2008, but for now is glad to be closer to home.

Condolences to the family and many friends of Virginia F. Hackney who died on Friday. Virginia had a strong independent will and spirit that kept her as active as possible over the past year. It seems like just yesterday we had all gathered on the back porch of her family home to wish her good health and warm wishes. Her friends at Chilmark Chocolates were an inspiration to her and she also enjoyed her skating club and the show she participated in over the spring. Yes Virginia, we will all behave!

Condolences as well to the family of Capt. Leonard Jason, Sr. whose services were held on Wednesday. Lenny was a family friend for nearly six decades and was a dear and generous friend to five generations of our Manning family. On more than one occasion he bundled us up in blankets and kept us warm by his pot bellied stove at his Menemsha home when we had fallen into the icy cold Menemsha harbor as young children. We learned a great deal from Lenny over the decades; our family would often open scallops at his place, gather around his stove and talk for hours. A lot of great memories with his words of wisdom.

Betty Joslow enjoyed a weekend visit from her daughter Laurie over the past weekend. Her daughter Wendy visited the weekend before.

Condolences to the family and friends of Bill Nicholson whose services were held on Tuesday. Bill was known for his building capabilities but most importantly for his devotion to his family and his collection of Civil War memorabilia.

Edwin D. Vanderhoop has returned from Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where he was a patient for a few days.

Faith Vanderhoop and her 11-month-old daughter Billie returned home recently after spending the summer in Anchorage, Alas., where Billie’s father James Shepherd was working in the film production industry. They had all driven to Alaska at the end of June and will await the arrival of James by automobile. This was Billie’s first flight home to Aquinnah.

A reminder: John Wightman will be presenting an evening of Island Images at the Beach Plum Inn on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. John will show his new 2007 images as well as some of his old favorites which probably include the Dilley. We look forward to hors d’oeuvres by chef James McDonough, and to seeing you there with Jan and John as gracious hosts.

Our Aquinnah highway superintendent Forrest Alley will celebrate on Oct. 15 while cruising around in his new bright red department truck while keeping our highways and byways looking great. As always, thank you Forrest for a job well done.

Darlene Pachico will party on Oct. 18 and shares the day with James Vercruysse.

As you head down the road on Thursday, wish Massachusetts state trooper Neal J. Maciel a happy birthday as he celebrates his special day on Oct. 18.
