Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is exploring whether an opportunity exists to move its sports program, including football, to the Atlantic Coast League following the resignation of North Quincy, Quincy and Whitman-Hanson high schools from the league next fall.

Michael Joyce, athletic director at the Island high school, said this week that letters have been sent to principals and athletic directors of Atlantic Coast League schools inquiring about the fit for Vineyard sports in the league.

“It’s really exploratory at this point. Peg [principal Margaret M. Regan] and I will follow up and hopefully meet with them to discuss [a league change] further,” he said.

“Some of the schools are a little bigger than us but are fairly comparable to us and geographically it’s a good fit,” he said. The league has seven towns, including Falmouth, Dennis-Yarmouth, Marshfield, Nauset, Plymouth North, Plymouth South and Sandwich.

Mr. Joyce said the goal is to combine sports under one league affiliation. Currently the football team competes in the Mayflower league; other teams play against teams in the South Coast Conference although the high school was dropped from the conference during the last school year.

The Atlantic Coast League could accommodate every sport but lacrosse, Mr. Joyce said.
