The weekend weather was seasonable with cold mornings. As you have noticed, daylight recently has been arriving at nearly 7 a.m. But that will change Sunday. Please don’t forget to turn your clocks back an hour Saturday night, because when you awake Sunday morning, we will be operating on standard time.

Our congratulations to the World Champion Red Sox and their four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies. After the game began, I did not see or hear a single car pass by my house.

My wife Anna, my daughter’s puppy Black Labrador, Sampson, and I went over to Taunton last Sunday to visit our daughter Nicole and her husband Arsen. They are very busy with interior remodeling work and had sent Sampson over to us for a vacation so he would not be in their way. Our son Sam came down from Framingham State College to help them.

In the area in Taunton where they live, folks really went all out decorating their lawns with all types of displays and lights for Halloween. Cleverly woven into many displays were the Red Sox logo and brooms signifying a sweep by the hometown team. One front lawn had “Go Sox” cut into the grass, highlighted by red chalk.

Over at Antonio’s Restaurant on Coggeshall street in New Bedford, waitresses were wearing Red Sox shirts. I also noticed that some houses had several cars parked in front, and it was obvious they were hosting Patriots parties as the football game started late in the afternoon. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend for Boston sports teams.

Dr. Sara Rosenthal and Dr. Julie Prazich of San Diego, Calif., and the Cove headed back home this past Saturday after spending some quiet time with Margaret Rose this fall at their house. Julie’s sister Vicky and her husband Buddy Miller of New Hampshire were their guests last week. They plan to visit with Sara’s brother Carey and his family and help celebrate his birthday on the way home. Because they live in downtown San Diego, their house was not affected by the devastating fires in that region.

Jack Reed of Washington, D.C., and Edgartown Road was in town last week on business. He is planning to return for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Jill Carlton and her husband Pete Karman of New Haven, Conn., were at her summer home on State Road to close it up for the season.

Warren and Marilyn Hollinshead of Pear Tree Cove recently returned home from a two-week vacation. Their tour concentrated on ancient Greece. After exploring Athens, Delphi and Meteora, they spent a week on the Aegean Sea, visiting the Cyclades, including Delos, Aegina, Mykonos, Santorini and others. Swimming off their 40-passenger ship was a highlight. A threatening storm forced the captain to take them on a 12-hour trip to the Peloponnese to escape the bad weather. As a result, they were able to visit Mycenae and view the treasures of that site before returning home.

The first leg of the 22nd annual students’ exchange with England ended this past Sunday. The 20 students from Bridgewater School and their chaperones headed home after a fantastic visit to the Vineyard. Our eighth grades will return the visit in the spring.

Bob Lane, vice principal of the school, reminds all parents about the coming parent-teacher conferences. Three sets of conferences are scheduled for the school this month. The conferences will start next Tuesday during the afternoon, on Thursday night for early-evening conferences and on Wednesday, Nov. 14 during the day.

The selectmen report that the proposed special town meeting scheduled after Thanksgiving has been canceled.

The Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society will host its annual Barn Raisers Ball in the hall tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

When you are in or near the woods these days, remember that the archery season for deer is into its second week and shotgun season will start at the end of the month. John Varkonda, manager of the Manuel Correllus State Forest, would like to remind people who enter the forest to wear brightly colored clothing to be on the safe side. Also, be especially careful when driving, as deer are apt to cross the road day or night at one of their favorite crossings.

Colleen Morris over at the library reports that a community poetry reading is set for 5 p.m. Sunday. You can read yours and listen to the others. More information is available by calling the library at 508-693-3366.

Don’t forget that the Visiting Nurse Service will hold a flu vaccine clinic at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School gym on Monday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m.

On Nov. 1, 1950, work began on a fire station on Edgartown Road. The site, a two-acre parcel, was donated by Susan Scott and was directly opposite her home. This climaxed several weeks of discussion by the selectmen to find a home for the town’s new fire truck. Nelson S. Bryant, chairman of the selectmen, expressed pleasure with the chosen location. He said her offer was far and away the most practical that they had received. John G. MacKenty, president of the agricultural society, had written a letter indicating that the society was willing to donate some of their land for that purpose and that was approved by their membership. However, the letter clearly pointed out the donated land was to receive access from school property in the arrangement. When objections arose about that, Mr. Bryant said the entire project was up in the air again. The board then voted to accept Mrs. Scott’s offer.

Happy birthday to Doug Kent, Ken Leuchtenmacher, John Mayhew and Elizabeth Bouck today; Suzanne Howes, Charlene Douglas, Lucy Mayhew and Carey Rosenthal tomorrow; Norm Perry, Sharon O’Neil, Maggie Chianese and Mike Lynch on Sunday; Ken Gerstmar and John Mansfield on Monday; Dawn Feinsmith, Peter Huntington, Judy Jaries, Pat Waring and Marian Irving on Tuesday; James Barton and Vickie Thurber on Wednesday; Marylee Schroeder and James Barton on Thursday. Belated birthday greetings to Frankie Flanders, John Adams, Sandy Hill, Rainee and Sarah Monast, and Julia Eger.

Well, that is all of the news for this week’s column. If you have any news, please call or e-mail me. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back an hour tomorrow night. Have a great week.
