Many Chilmarkers took advantage of the all-Island flu shot clinic this past Monday even though the present weather pattern shows little signs of the flu season arriving any time soon. Let’s hope we are all set for a sniffle-free winter. The event went very smoothly, at least when we were there midday. Thanks to all the volunteers.

A look through the Lucy Vincent diary for November 1907 tells us that a hard storm on Nov. 6 caused the water to break through the old creek and wash out the sand under some of the fish shacks, tipping them over. The local men spent the next day digging and managed to build a dam to re-route the water. Chilmark had its first snowstorm on Nov. 13 that year.

The Friends of the Library remind everyone that tomorrow, Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m., there will be a dedication of a tree on the library grounds in memory of Marvin Joslow. Marvin was an Aquinnah resident who served as president of the Friends of the Chilmark Library for a time as well as volunteering in other ways at the library. He was truly a friend of the library and is missed by all.

Word has reached us of the birth on Oct. 6 of Caroline Rose Blackwell Day. She is the daughter of Matthew and Tracy Day of Bethel, Conn., and she has two brothers, Jackson and Garrett. Caroline is the great-granddaughter of the late Charles and Ethel Whidden of Quitsa and through them traces her roots back to the first summer residents of Chilmark, the large Blackwell family which summered in Quitsa. Her grandparents are Bob and Barbara Day of West Tisbury. Congratulations to all.

Bruce and Marcy Slater of North Road are happy to announce the engagement on Nov. 2 of their daughter, Anne, to Jacques Lucchesi. The couple met on the Vineyard several years ago and now plan an Island wedding in September 2008. Jacques is the son of Renaud and Patricia Lucchesi of Old Saybrook.

Rob and Margaret Hannemann of Chilmark and Boston are excited to tell us of the birth of their new grandson, Theodore Lincoln Simmons, who was born Sept. 13 in San Francisco. He is the son of Mark Simmons and Alethea Hannemann who make their home in the Noe Valley in California. Rob and Margaret will be visiting Teddy and his family for the holidays, along with his cousin, Huckleberry, and his uncles and aunts from New York and Chicago. The Hannemanns will be back in Chilmark by July 4. Cheers from us all.

Please note that the library will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22 for the Thanksgiving holiday. They will be open on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cheers to all for a happy Thanksgiving.
