Just when is the dead of winter? Is this it? Anyway, Chilmark is definitely in winter mode . . . enjoying the sunny days when we get them, enduring the gray days and, so far, not having much snow to move.

Karen Flynn tells us that her mother, Barbara, came home from the hospital on Christmas Day and enjoyed a 75th birthday celebration with her family on New Year’s Day. Karen and her family are well known to many as the tireless cooks at the Bite on Basin Road.

One of Karen’s winter projects is the FishFarm for Haiti. There will be a spaghetti dinner at the Federated Church in Edgartown on Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. to raise money for the Haiti projects. Karen will travel to Haiti in March with a group to continue the good works that they have been working on there.

The Chilmark members of the Democratic Party are having a caucus on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. at the community center. They will select delegates to the state Democratic convention. This year the meeting is three days before the presidential primary so plans will be discussed for the primary. All registered Democrats are welcome to attend and eligible to vote.

John and Barbara Armstrong enjoyed a long weekend in New Hampshire last week. They enjoyed sightseeing and seeing other people’s snow.

The Chilmark Public Library will present the movie The Lonely Dorymen in its original 16 millimeter format on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. It is a 1960s documentary film featuring Portuguese fishermen as they hunt for cod in one-man dories off the coasts of Newfoundland and Greenland. The Friends of the Library are sponsoring this interesting film and offer free drinks and popcorn to all. The family of Bette Carroll invite us all to a party for her in honor of her 85th birthday to be held at the Cornerway in the old Chilmark Tavern building on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Bette hopes all who play musical instruments will bring them and an old-fashioned sing-along will happen. We are asked to bring something to add to the potluck supper. Some of us remember when Bette and Curly ran the Chilmark Tavern. Cheers from us all.
