The Aquinnah landfill is legal.

Selectmen last week said the town received a landfill license on Jan. 14 from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Receipt of the license ends a year of environmental department reviews and inspections, which followed a town paperwork snafu several years ago that led to a failure to renew the license.

Selectmen also voted to place three articles on the Feb. 12 special town meeting warrant.

Two are related to joining the Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative, a new offshoot of the Cape Light Compact. The cooperative is planned as a vehicle for issuing bonds and for negotiating the sale of excess power that may be generated in the future as a result of renewable energy initiatives.

On Feb. 12 Aquinnah voters will also be asked for $1,300 to restore a half-time cut in staffing at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School music department.

Selectmen also voted to hire Steven M. Mathias as a special police officer. Mr. Mathias is a trained emergency medical technician and dispatcher who works as a dispatcher in the Dukes County sheriff’s communication center.
