The voices of several Vineyard residents will be featured in the upcoming documentary film Zeb: Schooner Life, which is being produced by Detrick Lawrence Productions of Edgartown.

The film tells the story of Zeb Tilton (1866-1952), a legendary schooner captain from the Vineyard and his iconic vessel, the Alice S. Wentworth. Covering the history of schooners, the schooner trade and its legacy, this film is scheduled for release later this year, with an Island premiere in June.

The voice of Zeb Tilton is played by Jon Harris, who has been an intermittent Island resident since the early 1970s. Mr. Harris, a distance energy healer and enjoys playing blues piano, taught in Vineyard schools until 2006. This is his first voice-over for a professional production.

Whit Griswold voices the early 20th century Cape Cod historian Henry Kittredge. Mr. Griswold has been a summer resident of the Vineyard since 1944 and a permanent resident for 10 years. He has been editor of Fishing magazine and a charter fishing guide.

Vineyard-born Fred Hotchkiss is the voice of John Leavitt, who sailed on the Alice Wentworth during the 1920s and later became curator of Mystic Seaport. Mr. Hotchkiss left the Island for a time to pursue a career in manufacturing but returned a few years ago with his wife, Anita. Educated as a paleontologist, he has long been involved in marine research, and last year he developed an educational program on starfish.

Detrick Lawrence, located in Edgartown since 1999, has produced more than 150 films, including Gloucester’s Adventure, a documentary on the rise and fall of the fishing industry told through the story of the schooner Adventure. It aired on WGBH.

Gordon Massingham is directing the Zeb film, which includes more than 30 interviews with Islanders and schooner experts from around New England.
