It’s spring at the FARM Institute already, with activities revolving around new life in the fields, barns and gardens at Katama Farm – caring for new lambs, calves and chicks; planting, cultivating and nurturing little seedlings.

The teaching farm will offer spring programs for kids five days a week beginning Tuesday, April 1. Once again the FARM can offer transportation Tuesday through Thursday via Stagecoach Taxi from designated schools, thanks to a generous grant from Mass Ag in the Classroom.

After-school sessions for grades one through five will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. until May 29 (except April 21, 22 and 23).

Students from all schools are welcome any day, however if you need transportation, it will be available on Tuesdays from the Tisbury school; Wednesdays from the charter and Chilmark schools; Thursdays from Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury schools. Transportation is available from the Edgartown School each day via the Katama bus. The fee for eight two-hour sessions is $120.

The Farmers-in-Training program will run Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for students age 10 and up with previous experience on the FARM. The session begins April 4 and runs through June 13 (except April 25). The fee for 10 two-hour sessions is $150. F.I.T. students are accepted based on their level of experience and commitment. Mentoring, apprenticeships and independent projects are all part of this program.

Kids love to lend a hand during the Saturday afternoon work program. Children ages 5 and up are invited to come from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. each week. This program runs April 5 to May 31 (except April 19 and 26). The fee for seven three-hour sessions is $155.
