A long-running feud over roosters between West Tisbury neighbors has been settled in mediation.

The town zoning board of appeals last month accepted a withdrawal of an appeal filed by John Amabile, a Brockton attorney for Robert and Kathy Harris, 7 Millstone Lane, who had contended that roosters housed on Lambert’s Cove property owned by neighbor Kurt Freund at 31 Millstone Lane violated the town’s noise bylaws.

Mr. Amabile notified the board that the matter had been settled and requested withdrawal of an appeal filed August 15, 2007 with the board. The appeal challenged a ruling by building inspector Ernest P. Mendenhall that the roosters are permitted according to bylaws relating to rural neighborhood character and that bylaw does not cover noise created by crowing roosters. The roosters are owned by Dyan Redick, Mr. Freund’s fiance.

The issue became public last July when the Harrises sought relief under town bylaws amid public controversy.

Terms of the mediated settlement were not available by deadline.
