A reminder of the annual Spring Social on Sunday, April 27 from noon to 5 p.m. at the tribal building. This is a potluck event where we host several New England tribes. The Aquinnah Youth Group will be hosting the teens from five New England tribes. It will be an afternoon of dance, drum, singing, and socializing. The entire Vineyard community is invited to attend. Please bring a dish to share. For your convenience, the Vineyard Transit Authority bus stops at the front door.

Get-well wishes to Edmund Silva as he recuperates at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where he underwent orthopedic surgery on Tuesday. Condolences to Bill and Kathy Smith, their daughters Samantha and Katy, and extended family members in the loss of Joanne Medeiros Smith who died Sunday. Joanne and I spent quite a bit of time together in recent years and her words of wisdom continue to resonate quite often.

Congratulations to Aquinnah resident Russell Smith on his new appointment as administrator for Dukes County. Russell was previously an Aquinnah selectman, has been our legislative liaison at the State House and has assisted us on numerous occasions on tribal issues as well as Aquinnah issues.

Carole Ann Vandal and her daughter Wenonah Bellecourt returned to their home in Minnesota over the weekend after a visit to her son Mekenok Bellecourt, Raina and their sons Legend and three-month-old Bangii. Carole also visited with her father Ed Silva who is enjoying the company of his brother Ralph who has recently moved back to the Vineyard after an absence of many decades.

Safe Haven Camp will be convening in a few weeks at the youth hostel for its annual gathering. Cherilla Brown, her daughter Coco, Janet Belain, and Rhonda Backus have all once again created a handmade quilt and this year it will be of blues and purples. The quilt is now on display at Alley’s Store where one may purchase a chance for $1. In their first year of donating a quilt, the ladies sold 1,000 chances for 2007 and are planning on selling 2,000 chances this year to benefit Safe Haven Camp.

During Safe Haven, the campers will again be hosted by members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah.) Weather permitting, there will be drumming and a history class at the Lighthouse at Aquinnah Circle with Woody Vanderhoop and his Black Brook Drum and history by yours truly.
