Tagging Vineyard Osprey:

Expert Explains Research

Rob Bierregaard, who has been studying the osprey population on the Vineyard for more than 35 years, will speak about the raptors in a lecture at the Wakeman Center off Lambert’s Cove Road in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m.

Mr. Bierregaard is speaking in conjunction with the annual osprey festival sponsored by Mass Audubon’s Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown.

He began researching osprey on the Vineyard in 1969. Since then, he has been investigating the habits and migrations of these birds on the Vineyard and beyond.

Since June 2000, in collaboration with Dr. Mark Martell of the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, Mr. Bierregaard has been putting satellite transmitters on ospreys, allowing the scientists to track their travels.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit Felix Neck.

More information on this lecture is available by calling the sanctuary at 508-627-4850. More information on Mr. Bierregaard’s work by visiting bioweb.uncc.edu/bierregaard/.
