Island police were busy over Patriots Day weekend with several calls of bad behavior at various nightclubs and bars. Oak Bluffs police in particular reacted to a high volume of calls for unruly behavior, including a brawl at Seasons Eatery & Pub that ended with several injuries and the arrest of two men.

The scuffle started just after 11 p.m. last Friday when 40-yea-old McDara Joyce of Milton allegedly groped a female employee. Mr. McDara was asked to leave but refused, and along with his brother, Patrick Joyce, 44, of Chicago, Ill., started a fight that involved numerous employees and pub patrons, including bartenders, bouncers, the karaoke operator and one of the owners.

Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said one of the Joyce brothers had an employee in a choke hold at one point while several people tried to pull him off. The lieutenant said alcohol likely played a role. Two off-duty police officers were in the pub at the time and helped restore order. Both brothers were restrained by the time police arrived, Lieutenant Williamson said.

“The two [off-duty officers] did a great job. They helped prevent the situation from escalating,” he said.

McDara Joyce was charged with battery, indecent assault and battery and disorderly conduct; Patrick Joyce was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct.

Earlier the same evening, around 10:15 p.m., Oak Bluffs police responded to another disturbance call on Circuit avenue in front of the Ritz Café. Officers arrested 32-year-old Ademar Marcelino of East Boston on an active arrest warrant out of Edgartown district court for failing to appear in court to face charges of operating under the influence of alcohol.

Mr. Marcelino was also charged with providing false information to police after he attempted to give a false date of birth. He actively resisted officers as they attempted to serve the warrant and was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Around 11:45 p.m. Friday, Oak Bluffs police responded to another fight at the foot of Circuit avenue and arrested Charles J. Caldwell, 38, of Oak Bluffs, after officers observed him grab another man by the back of the neck and slap him across the face.

Just after midnight the same evening, Oak Bluffs police responded to a domestic disturbance on Wing Road and arrived to find a male victim bleeding from the head. The victim told police his roommate, 54-year-old Johnny (Zeus) Faust, had hit him over the head with a chair and run off.

Officers searched the area and found Mr. Faust hiding in a tree in the backyard of the residence. Mr. Faust then jumped out of the tree and confronted the officers, charging at one of them and taking him to the ground where a struggle ensued. Several other officers eventually were able to gain control of Mr. Faust and place him under arrest.

He was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon (the chair), assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Later the same evening at around 12:45 a.m. Oak Bluffs officers responded to another call of a fight on Circuit avenue in front of the Lampost lounge. Upon arrival officers found a male victim with welts and lacerations on his face. The victim said he was jumped by four males outside of the bar, although he could not provide a description of his assailants.

The victim was treated by emergency medical technicians and refused transport to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Lieutenant Williamson said it was an unusual weekend. “I don’t know if the warm weather had anything to do with it . . . but there was a lot going on,” he said.
