Joan LeLacheur and her artistic collaborator Heather Hall will have an opening show of their felted silk creations and tapestries this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner. Joan will also have a display of her wampum jewelry and wampum designer tiles. There will be wonderful Mother’s Day specials for all to view and to place your order. Please stop by this evening to get a preview of their work. Their show will be up on display until May 23 during normal bank hours.

Juleann VanBelle, a registered nurse, will be at the Aquinnah Town Hall today, Friday, May 2 from noon to 1 p.m. for all of your health concerns. Please feel free to stop by and discuss with her any health issues you may have. For a review of your list of medications, please feel free to bring in all of your prescriptions to review their necessity and interactions. Have your blood pressure checked or simply ask a few questions — she is there for each and every resident of Aquinnah.

Richard Paradise and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society will present My Kid Could Paint That on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven. This is described as a “captivating, conversation-starting documentary about a child prodigy whose abstract art achieved five-figure prices.” Admission is $8, or $5 for film society members. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Nan Doty once again will be assisting the fifth and sixth graders from the Chilmark, charter, and West Tisbury schools in their Martha’s Vineyard Speed of Light Model Solar Car Race competition on Saturday, May 3 at noon. As always, the race takes place on the basketball court behind the West Tisbury Town Hall. The competition also draws students from Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and Edgartown schools. Racers need to arrive by 10:15 a.m. to register, test their car, make repairs, and to speak with community judges before the speed race begins. The community is invited to attend to encourage the students from our Island schools to try out their solar engineering skills and to cheer them on as they race with the sun.

Betty Joslow and the Aquinnah Community Programs Committee would like your assistance in planning the weekly flea markets for the summer season. If you have time to volunteer, have any new ideas, or are interested in assisting Betty, please call her at 508-645-3340.

Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, her husband Dan and their daughter Samantha returned home Sunday evening after spending more than a week in Florida. They thoroughly relaxed and enjoyed themselves at several of the major attractions in and around Orlando.

Michael R. Hebert returned recently after spending an enjoyable week in Florida with his family.

Samuel Vanderhoop Lee, son of Martha Vanderhoop and Marshall Lee, and his fellow schoolmates at Newton South High School will be heading to the National High School Mock Trial Championships from May 8 to 10 in Delaware. Their coaches Elliott Loew and Brian Hammel will accompany them on their journey where they will compete against 40 teams from the United States, South Korea and Guam as they all handle a new case. All the best to Sam and his team as they head to the nationals.

The annual town meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, with the town election set for Wednesday, May 14. If you are not going to be in Aquinnah for the day of the election, please stop by or write to the town clerk for an absentee ballot.

Joyce Bowker will observe her 23rd anniversary as director of the Up-Island Council on Aging this week. She certainly has quite a flock to watch over and does her job so well. Thank you Joyce for all you do and to your assistants and volunteers.

Happy fifth anniversary wishes to Gordon and Dona Perry as they celebrate on May 3.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Atzik as he celebrated his day on April 26 by waiting until April 27 to celebrate with the community. In the meantime, he and Lisa are great companions for Elaine and Gary Zwicky.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Ella Madison Mahoney as she celebrated on May 1 and shared the day with Nick Bologna. Jim Wallen will party today. Amy Vanderhoop will celebrate on May 3 and shares the day with Av Morrow who is one of the greatest supporters of so many efforts in and around Aquinnah. Jonathan Zack will party on May 4. Alexandra Taylor will certainly celebrate her special day on May 6 while enjoying her new home. Elaine Zwicky observes her special day on May 7. Philip Moreis will party on May 8.
