Boston cello sensation Sebastian Baverstam and the Russian-American piano virtuoso Constantine Finehouse will perform a concert at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on Sunday, May 25, at 4 p.m. The program includes works of Beethoven, Kodaly, Schemmer and Brahms, and will benefit The Vineyard Playhouse. A free reception to honor the artists and the composer Tony Schemmer will follow the performance.

A native of Newton, Sebastian Baverstam first performed in concert for a Vineyard audience 12 years ago at the age of six when his family’s ensemble, the Baverstam Chamber Players, appeared at the Old Whaling Church in a benefit for the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Since then, Mr. Baverstam has won numerous prizes, and his international reputation as one of the world’s top young cellists has flourished. He has performed as a soloist with several symphony orchestras and at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and at many European venues. In recent years Mr. Baverstam, who studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, has also played on the Island with his talented family in several special events for The Vineyard Playhouse.

Piano virtuoso Constantine Finehouse was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, raised in Boston and educated at New England Conservatory, Juilliard and Yale. He has won numerous prizes and has performed extensively in concert halls in London, St. Petersburg, New York and Boston. He has made numerous recordings, including works by Brahms and the contemporary American composer, Richard Beaudoin. Mr. Finehouse currently is recording the complete piano solo works of William Bolcom for Naxos records and has just returned from an April concert with Sergey Antonov, the 2007 gold medalist of the International Tchaikovsky Competition at the Teatro Verdi, Trieste. This will be Mr. Finehouse’s first concert on the Vineyard.

Boston composer Tony Schemmer’s works have been featured previously on the Vineyard at Bloomsday, 1995, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre.

Admission is by suggested donation of $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and free for children under 18. All are welcome to meet Mr. Baverstam, Mr. Finehouse and composer Tony Schemmer at the free reception after the concert.
