National Trails Day is Saturday, June 7. The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission will observe the day by sponsoring its 16th annual hike across the Island.

The commission’s Cross-Island Hike is a daylong, guided walk traversing some of the Vineyard’s most beautiful trails and conservation lands. Previous hikes have also included stretches across private properties with the permission of their owners.

Each year’s route is different. The entire hike is typically less than 20 miles in length. Due to the length of the hike, the pace is briskly led. Hikers are expected to walk at their individual comfort levels and can choose to walk only portions of the route.

A schedule will be posted on the land bank’s Web site, mvlandbank.com, identifying the hike’s starting and ending times, as well as the arrival times at several conservation areas and check points that may provide opportunities for individuals to start or end their hikes. Transportation to and from the hike, whichever the segment, is the responsibility of the participants. Everyone is encouraged to bring a friend — leave the friend’s car at the point where you will end your hike and drive together in your car to the point where you will begin. Participants are encouraged to use the Vineyard Transit Authority buses rather than their cars.

Hikers bring or arrange for their own lunch. The land bank provides fruit and water at a mid-morning and a mid-afternoon break. Sturdy shoes, water bottles, and sunscreen (or rain gear) are recommended.
