Summer may still be weeks away, but the music is already hot and spicy at Che’s Lounge in Vineyard Haven. Singer-songwriter Bella and her musical partner Daniel Waters have created a show of bossa nova and samba that opens Tuesday night, June 3, at 7 p.m., and will return (with musical friends and variations of repertoire) every Tuesday throughout the summer.

Many of the duo’s songs are original, composed during the Island winter just past. “We blend the ingredients of samba, jazz, bossa nova and blues,” says Bella, who is also a professional baker.

At the heart of the music is the cavaquinho, a soprano guitar of Portuguese ancestry that is essential to Brazilian samba and choro. Similar to a ukelele, the cavaquinho has steel strings and a silvery sound.

The two musicians also recently launched a compact disc with six of their songs, titled Samba Chocolate. Most of the songs are in Portuguese with an English adaptation by Daniel Waters, who also is the Poet Laureate of West Tisbury. Their work has been broadcast on local television and radio stations.

Che’s Lounge is at 38 Main street in Vineyard Haven (the back alley). Admission is $3, and refreshments are available. For information, please call 508-693-8555.
