Even if you don’t call your brother by the name of a different vegetable every day (Broccoli, Turnip, or, whenever he’s being nice, Pea Pod), many readers know what the quirky, crazy-lovable third grader Clementine means when she says, “Spectacularful ideas are always sproinging up in my brain.”
Perhaps it’s the same for Clementine’s creator, the award-winning children’s book author and Red Sox wannabe Sara Pennypacker. You can ask her — and try to find out Clementine’s brother’s real name (good luck) — when Ms. Pennypacker meets readers and signs books at Riley’s Reads bookstore in Vineyard Haven next weekend, Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to noon. Everyone is invited.
Sara Pennypacker is the Cape Cod-based New York Times best-selling author of eight children’s books, including Clementine, The Talented Clementine, Clementine’s Letter, Stuart’s Cape, Stuart Goes to School, Pierre In Love and the upcoming Sparrow Girl.
Beginning next year, she will take over the Flat Stanley series.
Clementine’s Letter, the much anticipated and newest book in the popular Clementine series was just published in April. For those young readers unfamiliar with the Clementine series, Clementine is a charmingly flawed and altogether unforgettable third grade student. As one reviewer put it, “Clementine fits right in with Ramona, Sheila-the-Great, and Pippy Longstocking. She’s a kid with a big heart, lots of questions, and a nonstop interest in fixing situations, and doesn’t say no to adventure. But like all kids, she doesn’t quite understand the rules.”
Ms. Pennypacker’s books have won numerous awards, including this year’s Golden Kite Award for Best Picture Book Text, and have appeared on many best books lists.
Her Riley’s Reads appearance will follow talks to second, third and fourth grade students at the Oak Bluffs School. The Oak Bluffs School received a grant from The Permanent Endowment Fund to bring children’s books authors and illustrators to the school. The Point Way Inn is hosting Ms. Pennypacker as part of its visiting artists program.
