At a recent meeting of the Oriental-Martha’s Vineyard Lodge of Masons, three Island men were welcomed into the fraternityas master masons.

Leo P. Convery Sr., a past master from Edgartown, received a 50-year service medal. The medal was presented to him by his son, Leo P. Convery Jr.

A Lewis Jewel, an emblem which marks the continuance of Masonry across generations. was conferred upon two members of the lodge. Jeffrey Baker received the first Lewis Jewel ever conferred in this lodge, honoring his father SumnerG. Baker. Bruce Nevin received one in honor of hisgrandfather, Capt. Ellsworth Luce West, who had been the last living whaling captain of the Vineyard.

The next major event in the lodge is installation of officers for the new Masonic year on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. The installation, which will be followed by dinner, is open to the public.
