Students Graduate

Hanss Buder, son of Lynn and Karl Buder of Vineyard Haven, has graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Mickaela Gray of Edgartown received a bachelor’s degree during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt. She majored in community and international development.

Christopher Look of Edgartown recently graduated from Tulane University. He was one of approximately 1,170 undergraduate students in Tulane’s graduating class.

Christoper Rego of Oak Bluffs has received a bachelor of arts degree in art from Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater.

Eric Soikkeli of Edgartown has graduated cum laude from Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., with a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. He is the son of Ellen O’Brien and Heikki Soikkeli.

Student Honors

Katherine Campbell of Vineyard Haven recently was named to the dean’s list at Emmanuel College in Boston.

Allison Carr of Vineyard Haven has been named to the honors list at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J.

Melanie M. Devaney of Edgartown was named to the dean’s list at Merrimack College in North Andover.

Christopher Leon of Oak Bluffs has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 term at Curry College in Milton.

Tonya Leonard, a student at Skidmore College, this spring received the John P. Shepherd Award from the college. The award is given to the Skidmore student who has demonstrated outstanding performance, potential and commitment to education and working with children, leadership among peers, and superior performance in academic achievement and in the field.

Tim McHugh of Edgartown has made the dean’s list at Merrimack College in North Andover. He also has received a scholar-athlete award from the college. He is a member of the men’s tennis team, which qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament this spring.

Jennifer Ross Reekie, daughter of Chele and Alan Reekie of West Tisbury, has been named to the dean’s list at Bentley College in Waltham for the fall 2007 semester.

Morning Star Tarter of Oak Bluffs, who is majoring in nursing, has been named to the 2007 fall semester dean’s list at Simmons College in Boston.

Two Vineyard students have been named to the dean’s list at Bentley College in Waltham. They are Colin Johannessen and Jeffery Smith of Chilmark.

Two Vineyard students have received honors for the fall 2007 semester at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. Max J. Currier of West Tisbury received dean’s honors. Fiona L. MacLean of Oak Bluffs received dean’s high honors.

Two Vineyard Haven students have received honors for the fall 2008 semester at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H. Kayla Mastromonaco was named to the dean’s honor list, and Eric Soikkeli was named to the dean’s list.

Two Vineyard students at Johnson & Wales University in Providence have been named to the dean’s list for the 2008 winter term. They are Laura Kheary of Edgartown and Jessica Forend of Oak Bluffs.

Studying Abroad

Alyssa Gill of Oak Bluffs, a junior at Syracuse University, spent the spring 2008 semester studying in Florence, Italy, through the university’s SU Abroad program.

Meghan Brielle Leonard, a Dartmouth college student in the class of 2010, from Vineyard Haven, studied French in Lyon during the spring 2008 term as part of the College’s Language Study Abroad Program. Ms. Leonard is the daughter of Richard J. Leonard and Pai Centenari-Leonard.

Student Honored for Letter

Flo Alexander, a student at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, has received an honorable mention in the Massachusetts Letters About Literature 2008 program sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for the Book in Boston. Ms. Alexander won her award for a letter she wrote to Kate DiCamillo, the author of Because of Winn-Dixie.
