A taxi owned by Adam Cab crashed into a utility pole on Lagoon Pond Road across from the Tisbury post office early Thursday morning, snarling traffic at the Five Corners intersection for several hours on one of the busiest days of the year. The accident occurred around 7 a.m., just as the early morning boats were arriving to deliver throngs of visitors and seasonal residents for the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Neither the driver or his passenger were injured in the crash, although both were brought to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by ambulance as a precaution, police said. The accident slowed traffic all along Beach Road, State Road and Main street.

At the time of this update, police were unable to release information regarding the driver’s identity or cause of the accident.

Tisbury police chief John Cashin said the taxi van snapped the utility pole at its base, causing it to hang precariously over the front of the vehicle. Emergency responders were unsure whether the vehicle was actually holding up the utility pole and electrical wires, and opted not to move the vehicle until a repair crew from NStar arrived soon after.

Chief Cashin said Lagoon Pond Road would be closed for several hours while repair crews worked on the felled utility pole. He said he did not expect any interruptions in electrical service.
