The Dukes County Commission is looking to fill the seat left vacant by Paul Strauss who retired from many of his public service positions last month. Letters of interest from those willing and qualified to complete the remainder of Mr. Strauss’s term are due by July 18 at 4 p.m. Applicants should be a resident of any Island town except West Tisbury or a resident of Gosnold and at least 18 years of age. County manager Russell Smith said the county is looking for someone with a desire to serve the public and a familiarity with the community. The job offers no pay.

The county charter prohibits more than two residents from the same town from serving on the commission at the same time. There are already two members of the commission from West Tisbury.

The county is also looking to fill the position of executive assistant. The deadline for applications has passed. The county received 21 applications and expects to hold interviews in the coming weeks. Both positions, Mr. Smith said, are important to fill quickly.
