The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a Thursday night race on July 3 and two harbor races on July 6. 

Thursday night was overcast with the threat of rain, and a 10-knot southwest wind. Six boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven harbor breakwater.

Finishing first was Bob Jewett in his Soling, Andiamo II. In second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In third was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31, Stormalong.

On Sunday, July 6, competition resumed with two harbor races. Nine  boats posted at red nun 6 in the outer harbor for the 10 a.m. race on a humid morning with a light and variable wind. The race committee called for the fleet to sail twice around a triangular course of approximately five miles.

In the A division, finishing first was Brian Roberts in the Hinckley 42, Starfish. In second was Roger Becker in the C& C 24, Gloria. In third was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31, Stormalong.

In the B division, finishing first was Bow Van Riper in the Vineyard 15, Tyche. In second was Alan Wilson in the Marshall catboat, High Tide.

The afternoon race saw a slight increase in the wind to about 5 knots from the east. The race committee called for the same triangle course as the morning race. Eleven boats posted for the 2 p.m. start at red nun 6.

In the A division, first place went to Phil Hale in the Alerion Sloop, Mischief. In second was Roger Becker in the C& C 24, Gloria. In third was John Amabile in the Swan 36, Solitude.

In the B division, first went to Charley Felder in the sloop Aerie. In second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In third was David Lott in the Cape Dory 27, Avanti.
