The third annual Vineyard Cup, one of the Island’s biggest sailing events, will take place this coming weekend.

At last count more than 60 boats have registered to sail in Nantucket Sound over the weekend, but the event begins Thursday morning with windsurfing in Vineyard Haven outer harbor.

The Cup starts with the two-day East Coast Junior Olympic Windsurfing Championships, which begin at 9 a.m. at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club.

As many as 20 young windsurfers from around the country are expected at this event. The best viewing stand will be at the foot of Owen Little Way, a road to the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club.

Then, on Friday, the Vineyard Cup organizers will host a competitors’ meeting. This is an expanded version of what is more familiarly known as the “skippers’ meeting.” Captains and their sailors and friends will get their briefings on the weekend races at Owen Park in Vineyard Haven.

Brock Callen, program director for Sail Martha’s Vineyard, said he anticipates more than 100 boats will be involved in this weekend’s sailing event. They range in size from one-design sailboats to a big 58-foot ketch and maybe even larger. More information is available by visiting vineyardcup.com.
