I just looked at the calendar and realized that next week is the fair and fireworks. That means the stores will soon be displaying help wanted signs and the college students will soon be leaving and of course the rest that goes along with this time of season.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons to my great niece Rianna who celebrated her day August 11, and to Tim Bettencourt who celebrated his day August 13.

Herb Ward has donated his award winning quilt Island Daylilies to raise money for the Federated Church Choir trip in 2009. Look for him and his quilt at the fair, or you can call him at 508-693-7683 for raffle tickets ($5, or five for $20).

As you may already have heard, Ursula Prada suffered a brain aneurysm on August 7 and was taken to Mass General Hospital, where she remains in very serious condition in the ICU. She is making slow progress, but it will be a longrecovery. Barbara would like to thank all who have sent their good wishes to thefamily. A fund has been set up to help with expenses, and anyone wishing to contribute can call Cindy Bonnell in the Edgartown Town Hall at 508-627-6140 for more in formation. Our thoughts are with the Prada family in this trying time.

The basic info on the 2008 MSPCA Walk for Animals: it is Sunday, Sept. 7. Registration begins at 11 a.m., walk at noon There will be refreshments, raffles and canine good citizen testing. Entry is $25, and participants are asked to get sponsors to donate. For more information, call the shelter at 508-627-8662.

Donaromas had their annual staff beach party last Saturday. It was a great day with lots of good food and company. It is always nice as we get to visit with our other fellow employees as the landscapers and lawn crew are always out and about when we arrive to work and are still out when we leave. So it is great to visit with them and meet their families.

There will be screening of the feature film documentary, Zeb: Schooner Life, based on Polly Burroughs’s book, Zeb, Celebrated Schooner Captain of Martha’s Vineyard, at The Whaling Church on Main street in Edgartown on Wednesday, August 20 at 8 p.m. The screening will be preceded by sea chanties sung by Mark Lovewell and Tristan Israel. Tickets will be sold at the door: $20 adults, $10 seniors and children. Don’t miss this great opportunity to see the compelling story of one of the Vineyard’s larger than life folk heroes, Chilmark’s own Zeb Tilton. Anyone with questions can call 508-627-8844.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
