The Tisbury harbor master was kept busy Monday as strong winds and choppy conditions led to a number of mishaps in and around the harbor.

Harbor master Jay Wilbur said easterly swells caused by high winds created precarious conditions. Just after noon, a woman injured her hand when it became caught between a 36-foot Grand Banks trawler and another vessel.

The harbor master was dispatched to evacuate the woman and she was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Just after 3 p.m. on the same afternoon, there was a report that a 30-foot fiberglass sailboat in the lagoon was taking on water. A hose from the toilet reportedly broke loose and was filling the vessel with water. The harbor master boat was again dispatched, and workers used a bilge pump for about an hour to keep the boat from sinking.

Around the same time, Mr. Wilbur said, a report came in that a 40-foot fiberglass sailboat on its way into the harbor had crashed into the side of the bridge. Strong currents had apparently pushed the boat into one of the pilings while it was under power, and a boat from the Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard responded and helped pull the vessel to safety.

Mr. Wilbur said it was a busy day, but not atypical for this time of year. “Just another August day at the office,” he said.
