Second Cut

The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, or so goes the old lyric from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma.

And this summer the corn has been great. But it’s the grass that’s as high as a wrinkled old elephant — or at least it would be if it hadn’t been for the trusty mower this year. Rain and sun, sun and rain — the combination left lawns and fields green and lush all summer. No brown-out or dormant phase. This is of course good for the landscapers and bad for the do-it-yourself home mower who is bone-tired from all that mowing.

But farmers have enjoyed a nice hay crop and in fields around the Island there is a decent second cut of hay this year. Which is good for the cows and horses who will eat it all winter.

It’s the Island-grown diet for livestock.
