It is fun to have the bass derby — as the locals still call it — up and running. The fishermen are everywhere and, as usual, they are not daunted by wind or rain. We hope they all catch winning fish!

Primary day went off without a hitch at the community center, thanks to the efforts of new town clerk, Jessica Bradlee and her helpers.

It has not been a busy news week. There were several weddings over the weekend. The Saturday brides had no sun but no rain and the Sunday brides had lots of rain. However, the weather is never the most important part of that day!

The Chilmark Community Church is changing its hour of worship to 9 a.m. beginning with the first Sunday of October.

Charles and Marjorie Phillips traveled to Union, Maine last week for a visit with their daughter, Susan Weber and her family.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club has begun an annual awarding of certificates of appreciation to businesses and nonprofits in each town who decorate with landscaping and window box displays that beautify the towns. There will be awards given in each town. Bonnie George, vice president for Chilmark, is making three awards in Chilmark this season. Winners are the Chilmark Library, Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank and Pandora’s Box. Congratulations to all. The garden club welcomes new members and Bonnie welcomes calls at 508-645-3214.

The Yard at Beetlebung corner is having performances this weekend. Be sure and call them for schedules at 508-645-9662.

I failed to tell you that the Chilmark Store will be closed on Sundays although it will remain open the rest of each week until Oct. 14.

Remember that the special town meeting is Monday night at the community center at 7:30 p.m. Come and help decide the Home Port’s fate!

Sorry this is short this week but I am headed off-Island tomorrow morning early and it has been my priority all week. Please call or e-mail me with your adventures for our column next week.
