Saturday, Oct. 4: Clear and sunny with less wind than the day before. Nantucket Sound sparkles in the early October light. Crowds gather and children scamper about at pumpkin festival at Morning Glory Farm. Orange, yellow, russet — the colors of fall are everywhere.
Sunday, Oct. 5: Overcast with variable clouds, passing showers and some sun late in the day. Cool and damp. Wood smoke drifts on the air up-Island as some homeowners build their first fires of the season. Wild apples fall by the roadside from old trees. New England asters bloom along paths at land bank properties.
Monday, Oct. 6: Day dawns sunny and crisp, warming into the mid-60s by lunchtime. Breezy. Bus tours unload in downtown Edgartown. The courthouse is a beehive of activity as fall sitting begins for superior court. Attorneys wearing dark suits carry paper cups of coffee into the halls of justice.
Tuesday, Oct. 7: Sunshine continues with warmer temperatures. Roses bloom on picket fences in Edgartown; Montauk daisies nod in the sunlight at homes along Beach Road in Oak Bluffs. Derby fishermen flock to the beaches hoping for a better catch in light winds. The shoreline silhouette is sketched with rods and reels and long-billed caps. Evening skies are dotted with stars.
Wednesday, Oct. 8: Light frost in the low places of the Island early in the morning. Day grows quickly warmer with abundant sunshine. Tourists wearing shorts and hiking boots wander about Menemsha in search of lunch. A lone kayaker plies the shoreline. In the swamps beetlebung trees have begun to turn. School children spill from yellow buses in the afternoon, headed home to change gear for soccer practice. Squirrels race up and down trees and scurry about in the brush, gathering acorns for the coming winter.
Thursday, Oct. 9: Day begins with steady light rain. Temperatures are mild and lawns and farms fields are lush and green. Clearing begins by noontime. Weekend forecast call for sunshine through the Columbus Day holiday on Monday.
