Jeanne Campbell — photographer, advisory board member of Featherstone Center for the Arts, and ardent supporter of the This I Believe series popularized by NPR’s Jay Allison — has invited artists to submit their own interpretations of This I Believe for an exhibition at the Oak Bluffs gallery.

All are invited to the opening reception on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. The show continues through Nov. 5.

“The challenge,” says Mrs. Campbell, “is trying to translate the belief into a visual form.”

How does an artwork express your belief in family, or that you believe in eradicating poverty?

“Pictures or sculptures or other art forms have to show it,” said Mrs. Campbell, adding that exhibiting artists may choose to define their beliefs with an explanatory card or short essay that accompanies the work of art.

This I Believe was a series that broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow began in the 1950s.

Now Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School teacher Matt Malowski is working with the STAR program (Students and Teachers Achieve Results) to introduce This I Believe to his students. He asks community volunteers to submit their own essays, then come to the school and discuss them with students.

“It’s to get kids involved in the community,” he said.

Artists and other Islanders are invited to bring a brief essay on their belief to Featherstone, beginning with the opening reception on Oct. 19. Mr. Malowski plans to invite volunteers to his class after Nov. 7.

The Featherstone gallery on Barnes Road is open daily from noon to 4 p.m.
