It’s a rock doc like you’ve never seen before: The average age of the singers is 81, and the group is a choir, not a clapped-out band of has-beens busting guitars on stage. The film Young at Heart follows the eponymous chorus from Northampton who belt out Sonic Youth and James Brown tunes, punk, pop, disco — even singing Dylan’s Forever Young at a penitentiary gig.

Young at Heart, with its unexpected drama, power and charm, is playing Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven, in a special benefit presentation for the activity program at Windemere.

What’s more, Windemere residents star in the public premiere of a short film which will precede Young at Heart. This 12-minute short was filmed and directed by the activites director there, Betsy Burmeister, and edited by Island filmmakers Liz Witham and Ken Wentworth.

Nine residents of Windemere talk about their families, careers, travels, experiences on the Island in bygone days, changes they’ve seen in their own long, full lives. Ms. Burmeisters said the residents had a lot of fun making the film, and a real kick out of seeing it as a finished short.

Perhaps someone like British filmmaker Stephen Walker, who saw the Young at Heart Chorus’ performance in London and was inspired to bring the choir to the big screen, might try to interest Fox Searchlight in extending the stories of our own longtime Islanders.

Admission is $8, or $5 for film society members. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time. For details, see online mvfilmsociety.com or call 774-392-2972.
