Deer shotgun season begins on Monday Dec. 1 and runs until the 13th. Please be sure to dress appropriately and be sure that your children and pets are also appropriately in bright orange. The deer weigh-in station at the Wampanoag Tribe will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week where refreshments will be available for hunters to stop by and enjoy while listening to “deer tales.” The Tribe would appreciate any and all donations of whole deer, hooves or skins which will all be used accordingly over the winter.
Coco Adams would like to remind one and all that there will be a Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Chilmark Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2: 30 p.m. There will be vendors from across the Vineyard with their homemade items, antiques, books, jewelry, furniture, jams and jellies, linens, holiday decorations and more. See you there.
Al Alley has arrived from Boston and is visiting with his father Forrest for the week and will spend time with his mother Emily Frank at her home in Edgartown during the week.
Billie Diamond Vanderhoop Shephard celebrated her second birthday with a party on Sunday with her family and friends.
Condolences to the Widdiss family in the death of Henry Widdiss who died last week near his home in Milton, at the age of 93. Uncle Henry always enjoyed his visits to Aquinnah with his sister in law Gladys Widdiss and her family. He enjoyed the family dinners and gatherings, fishing and all that he could share with one and all while on his frequent visits with Carl and Don.
Congratulations to the Vineyarders in their win against the Nantucket Whalers on Saturday. Those participating from Aquinnah included Tom Fantasia as a member of the football team, and his sister Elsie Fantasia as a member of the cheerleaders.
Ted and Judy Mayhew invite guests to enjoy your holiday shopping leisurely with a glass of wine and light refreshments at their home on North Road on Dec. 10 from 5.30 until 8 p.m. Rebecca Mayhew will have her homemade bath and body products, candles, handcrafted leather goods and her beaded jewelry. Kati Johnson will have her Mollygoggles children’s sweaters, felted bags, alpaca wraps and accessories. Patti Linn will also be there with her gourmet chocolates, especially her chocolate covered caramel apples.

Catching up with birthdays for the past two weeks, Curtis Sayles was 16 on the 22nd. Jim Barrett partied on the 23rd. Kenneth F. Belain, Jr. celebrated on Nov. 24. Peter Temple partied on the 25th. Captain Dick Thompson observed his 82nd birthday on Nov. 26. Josh Bergan partied on the 27th and shared the day with Martha Thorne and Peter Ochs.
Carlos Montoya will observe his special day today and shares the day with Diamond Vanderhoop. Alfred F. Alley, III will party on Nov. 29 and shares the day with Karl Burgess and Jane Belanger Norton.
Reverend Peter R. Sanborn will reach a milestone on Dec. 1, and shares the day with Doris Hamel, Coltrane Leport, who will be nine years old, and Ryan Mendez, who will be seven years old. Tuesday will be another fun day around Aquinnah with celebrants being Millicent Smalley, Farley Glavin, William Durwood “Woody” Vanderhoop, and Vernon Welch celebrating. Fellow Vineyard Gazette correspondent and Justice of Peace John S. Alley will party on Wednesday. Soraya Lynn Randolph will celebrate her first birthday on Dec. 4, and shares the day with Jacob Vanderhoop.
A very special Happy Birthday to Janie L. Bankoff-Popkin as she celebrates on Dec. 4 and recently observed her 41st year at Tufts Medical Center in the Gastroenterology Department where she has faithfully held the reigns under the direction of Dr. Marshall M. Kaplan for all these years. We have shared lots of laughter, stories and special times together over the decades since our work together.
