An Edgartown woman was issued a citation following a two-vehicle collision on Christmas day at the intersection of Old County and State Roads in West Tisbury.

Police said the accident caused major front end damage to both vehicles but no injuries to either driver.

West Tisbury police chief Beth Toomey said Norma Sousa, 79, was driving up-Island in a late model Buick Century on State Road when she started to take a left onto Old County Road and crossed into oncoming traffic. William Steranka, 61, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was driving down-Island on State Road in a Cadillac Cimarron when the Buick crossed in front of his path.

The two vehicles collided.

Ms. Toomey said it did not appear that either vehicle was traveling at excessive speed, and there was evidence both vehicles had slowed down at the time of collision.

“It appears [Mr. Steranka] might have seen that she was slowing to turn, so he slowed down . . . otherwise the collision could have been worse,” she said.

The chief said there have been a high number of accidents at the intersection of Old County and State Roads, although not many in recent years.

Ms. Sousa was cited for failure to give the right of way.
