The Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association will hold their annual banquet tomorrow at noon at the Edgartown Whaling Church. More than 100 recreational fishermen are expected to attend the luncheon in the Baylies Room. The event is open to club members and prospective members during this celebration of the club’s 20th year.

Club president Janet Messineo said January is one of the best times for holding an outdoor club sports meeting. None of the anglers are fishing and therefore they have no excuse for not attending.

The meal is being put together by Al Lattanzi of Lattanzi Pizzeria and Restaurant on Church street, while the Net Result is providing the shellfish for a raw bar. “Members are asked to bring an appetizer or a salad,” Ms. Messineo said.

The club will hold a raffle at this, which is by far their biggest fundraiser. The club annually donates money to scholarships and to youth organizations. Last year, they gave money to the Big Brother, Big Sister program.

A lot of fishing gear was donated to this year’s raffle by local tackle shops, the club president said. There are also baseball tickets being offered as winning prizes.

“A lot of fishermen come from off-Island. We’ve got Charlie Cinto coming. He is a legendary angler,” Ms. Messineo said.

The event also includes the election of officers: Ms. Messineo is going in for another term. For details, call 508-693-3360.
