Tisbury police are investigating a nighttime burglary at the Green Room in downtown Vineyard Haven Sunday night in which someone broke through a side door on the basement level and stole money from a cash register and donations canister and several items of clothing.

The burglary at 71 Main street occurred sometime after the store closed Sunday evening, while a fierce winter storm pounded the Vineyard. The break-in was discovered early Monday morning when an employee arrived for work. The employee saw the glass door in the alley between the Green Room and the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard had been shattered, and called the police.

Tisbury police chief John Cashin said there was evidence the unknown person, or persons, entered the store and searched several areas. Money was stolen from a cash register and a donation box in support of the MV Skate Park was missing. A number of display cases were also forced open, and several items of clothing are believed to have been stolen.

Chief Cashin said that store employees are now doing an inventory to help determine exactly was stolen. The store remained open through Monday morning and has been open for business as usual all week. Anyone who might have information about the burglary is encouraged to call the Tisbury police department at 508-696-4240.
