West Tisbury voters returned longtime assessor Michael Colaneri to another three-year term in an annual town election that saw a light turnout yesterday. Mr. Colaneri prevailed 305 to 239 over challenger Jonathan Revere, who came within 10 votes of beating Mr. Colaneri three years ago.

A total of 570 voters turned out, 26 per cent of those registered.

Mr. Colaneri thanked the voters for their support last night.

“I’m very pleased with the result,” he said. Mr. Revere could not be reached for comment.

In another contest on the ballot, Tara J. Whiting beat Jemima James in a race to replace retiring town clerk Prudence Whiting. Ms. Whiting won 357 to Ms. James’s 180.

Reached last night Ms. Whiting said she had been looking for a paid position at the town since returning to live full time on the Island.

“I’m very excited,” she said, “I start tomorrow, feet straight to the fire.”

Ms. James, who is a musician by trade, was in fine spirit last night.

“I was reading this quote from Lillian Hellman,” she said. “‘Decision by democracy is a fine form of government but it’s a stinking way to create’. And I like that for me. I’m doing fine, it gives me more room for my work.”

A four-way race for two seats on the board of library trustees resulted in a victory for Mellissa M. Hackney and Harvey W. Garneau Jr. who beat out Sarah L. Carr, and Isaac D. Russell.

Elected without contest were: F. Patrick Gregory, moderator (486); Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter, selectman (417); Timothy A. Barnett, board of health (437); Katherine Logue, treasurer (463); Brent B. Taylor, tax collector (436); Jeremiah Brown, tree warden (441); Timothy A. Barnett, constable (427); Gregory Orcutt, finance committee (408); Virginia C. Jones, planning board (428); James R. Powell, planning board (393); Nicole Cabot, parks and recreation committee (439).

Mr. Gregory was the top vote getter.
