The Women’s Symposium will be held at the Chilmark Community Center tomorrow from 9 a.m. to noon. The discussion topic is Coping.

While in Chilmark over the weekend, you will find Larsen’s Fish Market opened on Thursday, Menemsha Fish Market has remained open all winter, the Menemsha Café has opened under new management and with major renovations, Jane Slater has opened her Over South Antique Shop, and Marshall Carroll has kept the gas prices low at Menemsha Texaco.

Members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will travel to Cambridge tomorrow to attend the 14th Annual Harvard University Pow Wow. Festivities begin at 1 p.m. and are held on the green in Harvard Yard. Admission is free.

The Aquinnah Public Library will host the strategic planning committee on Monday, May 4 at the library. We are grateful for the professionalism of the staff while in temporary quarters at the town hall during the winter. If you have any suggestions, please drop them off at the library on Saturday.

The Island Council on Aging will now be the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living to meet the needs of mature Islanders and the people that serve them. Vineyard high school students will have an opportunity to submit their idea for a new logo. Two volunteers are needed from Chilmark to serve on the board of directors and an alternate from Aquinnah is required. For information, please e-mail mvcenter4living@gmail.com.

Joyce Bowker, our up-Island Council on Aging Director will observe her 24th year at the Howes House. She continues to serve our communities well and is always so attentive to the needs of our maturing population.

Evan Hall, son of Norman Hall and Saskia Vanderhoop recently participated in the Clearasil Pimple Blocker Battle as a member of the Kelley Peters Dance Group. They performed in Times Square in Manhattan. For now they are in the finals hovering between first and third place. Jay and Millicent Smalley and their children Tiffany, Zachary and Faith returned home on Sunday after spending the week in Orlando, Fla., where they toured Universal Studios. They had a wonderful family vacation as they toured around Orlando and nearby sights.

Nanauwe Vanderhoop and her mother Saskia recently returned from Wageningen, in the Netherlands where they visited with Opa Erik and Oma Agnes Dongen for nearly a month. Nine-year-old Nanauwe celebrated her birthday while there and enjoyed attending school.

Congratulations to our up-Island United Parcel Service driver Mark Kokoszka and his wife Erin on the birth of their son Benjamin Edward Kokoszka on April 5 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Benjamin was welcomed home by his sister Sophia.

Condolences to the family and friends of Raymond Moreis Sr. whose services were held on Thursday. Raymond was the eldest male of the Moreis and Araujo families. He is survived by his wife Sybil (Gonsalves), their 10 children, grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his Araujo and Moreis brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Condolences to the family and friends of Shirley (Steere) Smith who died. We fondly remember her pleasant services at Shirley’s Hardware Store.

From the Vineyard Gazette archives for this week in 1929: “Gay Head Proud Possessor of New Town Building. The Island’s smallest town is now the proud possessor of the newest town hall on the Vineyard, Gay Head’s town building being practically completed, although not yet furnished. The rest of the work was expected to be finished before Saturday night, providing the furnace arrived on the Island in time.”

Happy sixth anniversary wishes to Gordon and Dona (Mazza) Perry as they celebrate on May 3 while preparing to open their Dreamcatcher Café at the Cliffs for the season.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Ray Ellis who celebrated his on April 24 with a grand party on Saturday that actually lasted all weekend.
