An Aquinnah special town meeting was postponed for lack of a quorum Tuesday and is rescheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m.

The meeting came on the tails of a busy political week for the town, with the annual town meeting and election which both saw solid voter turnout.

But Tuesday’s warrant was a relatively sparse affair chiefly made up of housekeeping measures, and failed to interest enough townspeople. A total of 39 voters is required to make a quorum in Aquinnah; only about 20 had showed up when moderator Walter Delaney closed the meeting shortly after 7 p.m.

As a result, the town will have to wait to start a project to install safety vents at the town landfill, and will not be able to transfer $25,000 to cover spring legal expenses.

Originally scheduled for directly before the annual town meeting, the meeting was shifted to this week by Mr. Delaney who feared the controversy generated by a draft article proposing to lease an area of the Aquinnah cliffs for a performing arts stage would overshadow the main meeting.

That article was subsequently removed from the warrant, along with a request for more funds to correct a botched job of burying power lines at the Cliffs.

Selectman Jim Newman said that while the questions on the warrant are not controversial, they nonetheless involve essential town business that must be addressed before the end of the fiscal year.
