A public hearing will be held in West Tisbury at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the public safety building on State Road on the proposal from American Tower Corporation to build a distributed antenna system (DAS) to improve cell phone coverage in the three up-Island towns.

The town last year signed a memorandum of understanding with Aquinnah and Chilmark to join together and build a new DAS system, although since then some residents have questioned the plan and called for the town to drop out of the deal altogether.

At a public hearing in April with American Tower Corp. concerns about aesthetics, finances and health were all raised. The original plan called for building 25 nodes, each about 18 inches in diameter and approximately 40 feet in height, with antennas and equipment boxes attached to each pole.

But after negative reaction to the plan, American Tower went back to the drawing board. The plan now calls for 47 nodes to be built on poles around 12 inches in diameter, each equipped with a whip antenna.

American Tower has already applied for special permits in Aquinnah and Chilmark, but has not filed an application in West Tisbury. The town in most need of the DAS system is Aquinnah.

Company spokesman David Pierce said last week the new arrangement will be less intrusive and blend better with the surroundings. In recent weeks, the company has planted two-foot stakes with a green ribbon in the ground where the future poles will be located.

After next week’s meeting in West Tisbury, another meeting for all three towns is scheduled for June 22.
