The Vineyard Fast Ferry, shuttling passengers from Quonset Point, R.I., to the Island for its seventh summer season, has lowered rates to their lowest level since 2006 thanks to lower fuel costs.

Vineyard Fast Ferry president Charles A. Donadio Jr. said reservations are up over last summer on the service which passengers use to connect to the Island from the airport in Providence and the Amtrak train.

Mr. Donadio said in a statement he was further optimistic due to a newly completed freeway. “Our Martha’s Vineyard Ferry service has always been the closest option to visitors driving from the Connecticut and New York areas,” he said, “but now with the new Quonset 403 Highway completed it provides a direct, open freeway right to our dock.”

The service is getting ready to break ground on a new ferry terminal with new amenities including restrooms, wi-fi access and a view over Narragansett Bay.

Vineyard visitors who do not need to take a car to the Island can avoid the Cape traffic, he said, adding: “Most of our customers consider saving two to three hours of travel time each way as extremely valuable.”

The Vineyard Fast Ferry offers airport shuttle service for $15 and Amtrak shuttle service for $18.
