Despite dismal weather conditions, the sixth annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Martha’s Vineyard raised more than $60,000 for cancer research and patient services in the walk through the night to help raise funds and cancer awareness.

“The Martha’s Vineyard community really showed its spirit this weekend,” said Lauren Brodeur-Arlia, community executive for development with the American Cancer Society in a prepared statement. Hundreds of people turned out for the event on a night that was marked by chilly downpours and gusty winds.

More than 400 people participated. The 28 teams represented community businesses, organizations, clubs and schools.

During the survivors’ lap and survivors’ reception, participants honored more than 48 survivors who came to celebrate their success in the fight against cancer.

Any outstanding donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society, 5 Manly street, West Bridgewater, MA, 02379, through August 31, 2009.
