The Vineyard Playhouse’s popular summer series of new work, the Monday Night Special, begins its season with You Want Me To Do What? My Life As A Nurse, a new solo performance piece written and performed by Mary Lou Shriber.

You Want Me To Do What? will be presented on Monday, June 22,at 7 p.m. at the playhouse on Church street in Vineyard Haven.

It’s a coming of age story that tells the tale of a young woman, the author, who always wanted to be an actress but who stumbled into nursing and the ensuing profound effects that nursing and her patients had on her life. The piece takes us from Detroit, the author’s hometown, to Boston, where she worked as a nurse, and is told through song and ironic, often hilarious remembrance.

The piece was developed over the past year in Gretchen Cryer’s (I’m Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road) solo performance workshop in New York and is having its first public viewing at the playhouse.

Mary Lou Shriber was most recently seen on Fox-TV in the hit series, Fringe, and on Guiding Light. Favorite theater roles include Paulina in The Winter’s Tale and Lula in The Dutchman. She appeared in Boston in The All Night Strut!, has sung in concert with the Boston Pops, and hosted the Good Day Show for WCVB-TV, Boston. She is a seasonal resident of Aquinnah. Linda Berg of Tisbury will accompany her on the piano.

Tickets are $25. Advance purchase is recommended. Rush tickets at $20 cash only will be sold at the box office on the night of the reading for any seats still available. For tickets call 508-696-6300 or visit our online vineyardplayhouse.org.
