Harvey Burrell of Vineyard Haven and East Boston was selected by the WGBH-Lab as part of a team of six other young filmmakers to write, film and produce a short documentary about global warming.

With the help of a $2,000 grant from WGBH, their documentary — titled Cold Water — will examine the effects of greenhouse gases and rising water temperatures on the fish populations and fishing industry in the Atlantic Ocean, specifically along the New England coastline.

Cold Water and the other eight documentaries funded by the WGBH Lab’s Youth Voices Open Call will be released in both rough and final versions via the Web site lab.wgbh.org.

Nine finalists now working on documentaries are from Massachusetts, New York, Louisiana, South Carolina, California and India.

Mr. Burrell, who graduated in May from Concord Academy in Concord, also won honors for his film work from the Williston-Northampton Film Festival, which gave his short action movie, Snow Ball, the award for best editing.

Sharing the award was Tripp Clemens, a member of the documentary team making Cold Water and a partner with Mr. Burrell in Wind Powered Productions, a fledgling film company based in Newport, R.I.

Mr. Burrell is the son of Christopher Burrell of East Boston and Mary Etherington of Vineyard Haven.
